A few months ago I was asked by a good friend, Clay Duda, to give a presentation at SoCon13, one of the Southeast’s premiere and longest-running social media and marketing conferences. At first I was pretty apprehensive; I had never given a presentation in front of a group of strangers and honestly, I wasn’t sure what I had to bring to the table. The topic was completely up to me, but Clay had given me some suggestions of things he thought I would be great at. After thinking about it for awhile I decided to pull the trigger. I figured it was a new year and time for some new challenges.
I decided to do my presentation on how I use social media to meet and build relationships with potential clients in real life, so the name Detective Work: Using Social Media To Grow Your Business IRL was created. On the day of the event, I have to admit, I was pretty nervous. I met Shai Smith from The Vagabond Studio and Meghan Stoneburner there and went to a couple of the other presentations before mine, so that helped a lot. One of the presentations I attended was done by my friend Jim Hodgson from The Atlanta Banana. His presentation was not only informative, but funny, and featured a lot of great cat photos. You can’t go wrong with that!
When I arrived for my presentation, I was hoping for about ten people to be there….you know, to make it easier, but I was pleasantly surprised how many people decided to attend. My wife Jessica even came to show her support. :) As I was speaking, I continued to notice one lady that was drawing the entire time. I kept thinking to myself, “Dang, I must be really boring to want to draw through the whole thing.” After I finished taking the last few questions, the lady that was drawing handed me this awesome “graphic capture” above. I laughed to myself and was amazed that she took my entire presentation and turned it into a cool info-graphic. Not only does it seem like a great way to take notes, at least for me, but what a genius marketing idea!
In the end, the day turned out amazing. I’m really honored to be a part of something so awesome, met so many new people, and have the opportunity to learn a ton. It was also really rewarding stepping outside my comfort zone, getting up there, and interacting with people. The best thing about SoCon, aside from all the great people and education, was the inspiration; and inspiration stimulates you to take action!
