Shanel & John | A Springtime Abandoned Building Engagement In Atlanta

Engaged couple wearing blue standing in old warehouse shot through broken out window at abandoned building engagement

Shanel & John wanted something extra unique when it came to their engagement session. After talking with them, they explained they loved the contrast between dark and gritty and soft and beautiful. As it turns out, I love urban exploration and old abandoned buildings, so I thought that would be a great fit for what they were looking for!

As with most abandoned locations, there is typically some degree of trespassing and potential danger. I searched through all of my favorite abandoned locations and revisited a number of them trying to find something that would offer us the opportunity for the time we needed to shoot, a higher level of safety, especially for them, and easy to access.

I finally decided on an old train yard and Shanel and John both loved the location idea. We had to park about a quarter of a mile away and walk the rest, but once we arrived, we spent some time roaming the giant buildings just exploring and checking things out. While we were shooting we kept hearing lower voices coming from different directions but didn’t see anything. We laid low in a room trying to figure out who or what it was and then we finally saw a couple walking through one of the buildings with their dog checking things out. They spotted us out the corner of their eye and were extremely startled. Lol. Nothing better than scaring someone in a creepy abandoned building. Out of focus engaged couple kissing in graffiti filled warehouse with rain pouring down at abandoned building engagement

As we made our way through more of the buildings we stumbled upon a vagrant who was taking a nap in a train car. He didn’t seem to mind us shooting photos and continued to nap. As we were finishing up it began to rain….well pour. At that point, it wasn’t too bad since we were inside, but we still had to make our quarter of a mile walk back when we left. Once we finished their engagement session, I ended up leaving Shanel and John there protected from the rain as I jogged back to the car to pick them up with an umbrella. No sense in everyone being soaked. Here are some of my favorites from the day!
