So we (as in a collective of volunteers) recently finished up our 4th annual Help-Portrait Worldwide charity event and it turned out way better than we expected!
If you haven’t heard of Help-Portrait, it’s a worldwide movement of photographers giving back to their communities around the world. So far, the Help-Portrait movement has delivered over 201,367 portraits with 16,488 photographers, 23,984 volunteers, at 1,720 locations, in 60 countries and counting all for FREE!! Yeah….it’s pretty awesome stuff!
This was my third year participating in Help-Portrait and my second year co-leading our Woodstock Cherokee location. Although it’s a TON of work and planning, I think we managed to pull off an extremely successful event this year, and it was even bigger and better than we achieved last year. This year we decided to add makeup artists from Mary Kay and hair stylists from Azure Salon to make the experience even more awesome for our guests. I was really blown away (no pun intended) at how great they were making everyone look in such a short amount of time.
One of our guests told me she had never had her hair or makeup professionally done, and this was going to be her first portrait too. After I complimented her on how gorgeous she looked, she said, “that is the first time anyone has told me I look beautiful.” Simply an amazing feeling for us both.
Again this year, First Baptist Church of Woodstock gave us a lot of help supplying the location, food, their connections with the community, time, and 100s of other things. They are really big supporters of our Help-Portrait and we could not do it so well without them. Also, without our 60+ volunteers, we definitely couldn’t do anything. We had so many talented and skilled people from photographers, to hair & makeup, secretarially help, people checking in our guests, others directing them where to go, and more! It was a well managed and organized circus.
From everyone volunteering together, we were able to serve 560 people and deliver over 160+ portraits to different families and individuals, many of which haven’t had a portrait taken in many years, and some, never. With all the insane things going on in the world, I feel it’s so vital to always have recent photos of your family and friends because honestly, you never know when they might not be here. I’m so happy we were able to give that gift to our guests.
I….and we…really appreciate everyone’s hard work and dedication to wanting to give back to our community. I hope everyone had a great time and I really look forward to seeing everyone next year. The date of our next Help-Portrait day is, December 7th, 2013, and we have already started planning!
Oh! And lastly, I found out because of everyone sharing my blog posts, Facebook, and Tweets, that a few family members, friends, and others decided to help out with their first Help-Portrait in many different states! That’s some pretty amazing and inspiring stuff! :D
Let’s keep sharing the caring with the world!
