Often I drive by Lake Acworth and in the fall / winter time, the city drains the lake. I love the way the drained lake looks, especially at sunrise or sunset, and decided to do some casual fashion forward portraits there. Last year I did some styled wedding portraits with fire in the empty lake that you can check out at Winter Trash The Wedding Dress With Fire.
I contacted my friend and makeup artist Kari Roberts to help out with makeup and planning. We got a couple of models and set the date. Sadly, our first go at it was a bust. After weeks of warm sunshine, we ended up with 22 degrees and high potential for rain or snow. Luckily everyone was able to reschedule for the following week instead of suffering through the horrible cold. The following week worked out much nicer. It was still a little chilly and still expected rain, but nowhere near as bad, which made wading in the water a little more bearable. Once we all arrived on-location, Kari set up her makeup area while I set up a popup changing room and browsed though clothing for our models, Elizabeth and Craig.
I started working with Craig first since his makeup only included a little clear matte powder to limit shine. We walked a good distance into the middle of the lake through tons of mud, rocks, and old fishhooks. Part of my goal for the shoot was to test out some new photo gear I want incorporate into weddings and editorial assignments this year, so I started with that. Craig and I spent about thirty minutes in the lake before Elizabeth was ready and traded places with him.
After photographing Elizabeth for a bit, we all made our way to the other side of the lake which turned out to be a lot further of a walk than it looked. My original idea was to shoot on a rock formation that protruded into the lake, but about half way there, it just seemed way too far. Nonetheless, the location we stopped at turned out to be a really great spot as well. Eventually the sun peeked out a bit, but not for long. About an hour later, we decided to call it a wrap and make the long walk back to get cleaned up and to get warm. Here are a few of my favorite photos. My name is Matt Druin and I’m an Atlanta portrait photographer.
