As many people already know, I’m a big fan of urban exploration. I love exploring old abandoned buildings and locations. There is something about discovering the old history, seeing the architecture, and experiencing the remittances of once was. I also love photographing people and really getting know them on a personal level. Listening to their life stories, their accomplishments, and their setbacks. I’ve never really been a book reader, but photographing people is like reading books for me.
Recently I was exploring an old abandoned mill with a friend in Augusta Georgia and discovered so many opportunities that would make for amazing portraits. This particular location is not one of the worst abandoned locations I’ve explored, but when I’m dealing with other people, their safety is my number one priority. The mill is in a pretty sketchy, the ghetto if you will, part of town. It also is suffering from bad fire damage and is rotting away in 90% of the building, so falling 2-3 stories is pretty easy to do. You have to be really aware and test ever step you make. Rusty nails, metal scrapes, shards of glass, and other dangers lurk everywhere. Not to mention bums, drug addicts, spiders, snakes, wild dogs, and other animals, which are pretty common too.
Luckily I found Jasmine who was willing to endure some potential danger for the sake of my ideas. We had never met prior, so to show up to a remote abandoned location to meet some random photographer from Atlanta she didn’t know took a little bravery in itself. With emails and Facebook, it made it a little easier though. Here are some of my favorite fashion portraits of Jasmine at an old abandoned mill in Augusta Georgia.
